artistic and historical development of the region.
The many people who lived and prospered here from the Lombards and Bizantines
to the Normans and Swabians have left wonderful cathedrals, sanctuaries
and churches.
THE PROVINCE OF FOGGIA
Foggia
Cathedral built by William II in 1170 dedicated to S. Maria Icona Vetere.
Lucera
Cathedral built by Charles II of Anjou in 1300 dedicated to the Assumption.
Monte Sant’Angelo
Sanctuary of the Archangel Michael, V-VI centuries.
San Giovanni Rotondo
Santa Maria delle Grazie, Centre of Padre Pio.
Troia
Cathedral in Apulian-Romanesque style built in 1300. Of Interest are
the bronze door and the eleven ribbeded rose window.
THE PROVINCE OF BARI
Altamura
Cathedral in Romanesque-Gothic style began by Frederick II between 1280
and 1232.
Bari
Cathedral built over the remains of an ancient Byzantine cathedral in
Apulian-Romanesque style.
Basilica of St. Nicholas. One of the most splendid examples of Romanesque
architecture.
Bitonto
Cathedral built between 1175 and 1200 in Apulian-Romanesque style.
The sanctuary of the Saints Cosma and Damiano.
Canosa di Puglia
Cathedral from the mid-XI century dedicated to S. Sabino. It contains
the tomb of Boemond, the son of Robert Guiscard.
Conversano
Cathedral in Romanesque style built between the XI and XII centuries.
Molfetta
Cathedral built in the XVII century with a Baroque façade.
The old cathedral of S. Corrado in Apulian-Romanesque style.
Trani
Cathedral in Apulian-Romanesque style dedicated to S. Nicola Pellegrino
begun in 1094 and completed in the XIII century.
THE PROVINCE OF BRINDISI
Ostuni
Cathedral begun in 1435 and completed between 1470 and 1495. It has
a late-Gothic façade with a 24 beamed rose window.
THE PROVINCE OF LECCE
Otranto
Cathedral built in 1080 by the Norman Roger. It has a 16 beamed rose
window of the XV century, a baroque portal of 1763 and in the interior
the mosaic of the XII century by the monk Pantaleone.
Squinzano
From the city going towards the sea one can find the church of Santa
Maria di Cerrate of the XIII century in Romanesque style.
THE PROVINCE OF TARANTO
Laterza
The abbey of Santa Maria la Grande, founded by the Normans in 1112.
Manduria
Cathedral of Romanesque origin.
Taranto
Cathedral founded in 1071 dedicated to Saint Cataldo. The actual façade
is a result of the XVIII century refacing.
The church of San Domenico Maggiore, rebuilt in 1302 over a pre-existing
XI century structure.
